The Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 focussed best at widest aperture, ISO 100, with a -11 adjustment. So I've been through both my 18-105mm kit lens, and 35mm f/1.8 lenses, and the results were suprising, and really pleasing. AF Fine Tuning can be entirely switched off too, so it doesn't seem that dangerous to me! There's a lot of warnings around AF Fine Tuning, however it's just a setting corresponding to each lens, stored in camera, which can just as easily be reset to zero if the results are no good. Having read a lot about the benefits of AF Fine Tuning, but put off by doing it manually - too fiddly / inconsistent, I decided to give Reikan FoCal a whirl (Beta version is compatible with D7100, and worked fine for me).
